About Mondim de Basto

Mondim de Basto is a municipality in the Vila Real district of northern Portugal. The town lies on the left bank of the Corgo River. It is the seat of the Mondim de Basto Parish. The population in 2011 was 5,685, in an area of 102.42 km². The present mayor is António Rocha and the president of the municipal assembly is Vítor Hugo São Miguel. The town is served by a railway station on the Tâmega Suburban Railway. The municipality includes several villages, including Mondim de Basto (town), Vilarelhão, Vilar de Ferreiros, Vilar de Rei, Vila Ruiva, Ermida, Salgueiral, Vila Nova, Refóio do Lima, Vila Pouca, Vila Cova, São João da Talha, Vila Velha, São Sebastião da Feira and São Cristóvão. The area of the municipality is mountainous, with forests and small farms. The Corgo River runs through the centre of Mondim de Basto. The municipality is home to the Mondim de Basto Dam, which provides hydroelectric power to the region. The economy of Mondim de Basto is based on agriculture, livestock, forestry, and tourism. The municipality is known for its production of chestnuts, honey, and wine.
